"Mike also requested a business plan to help him understand Entirely Sound and made suggestions regarding the company's on-line profile. Having someone thinking objectively about your business is extremely useful when getting a website up and running."

Usability design

Plan your site and application with you so it works the way your customers work.

Why do we need explicit usability design?

Explicitly designing for usability ensures that your web site or web application will work for your customers. They will easily achieve what they want to do - and you will receive the benefits of that.

No one sets out to design a web site or web application that has poor usability. To the designer it is always usable.

However, people think differently and have different levels of experience and skills with web technology. What is obvious to the designer may be obscure to the user.

Poor usability - death by a thousand cuts

The difference between a highly usable web site and one that is poor is an accumulation of many small things.

Addressing usability requires ensuring that many seemingly minor elements and factors are considered.

One common problem is illegible text.

Web Success made a significant usability improvement to an Internet Banking application at very low cost.

The only assurance of usability is testing

You've followed all the conventions and standards and have been very careful to design from the customer's perspective. However, until you have completed usability testing you won't really know whether your site will be used as you intended or understood as you intended.
